The history of art has always been littered with the names of great men—Michelangelo, Pablo Picasso, Leonardo Vinci—but in the shadows of those male artists have stood bright, talented powerful female artists like Lavinia Fontana, who were equally as important in shaping the art world.
Regarded as the first female artist in Western Europe, Fontana received lucrative commissions for her work. Her family depended on her career as a painter; her husband even serving as her agent while helping raise their 11 children. In this program, you’ll learn more about who Lavinia was as a painter and understand the role of women in Baroque art. Join us to learn what she accomplished and then make plans to visit the Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College to see one of her works on display.

About Your Program Presenter
Leslie Tate Boles has taught art history for the past 24 years. Her interest and specialty lies in the work of Italian and Northern female artists working in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. In addition, Boles has been a curator at various museums and for Walt Disney Imagineering for the past 30 years.
