One of the best things you can do for your health is learn to lower your risk for heart disease, the leading cause of death for men, women and Americans of most racial and ethnic groups. And the battle begins in the kitchen. What you eat can dramatically improve your health and decrease your chances of developing heart disease related illnesses, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
Rather than focusing on what not to eat, the Food as Medicine series, a collaboration between the Winter Park Health Foundation and AdventHealth, seeks to inspire you to learn to love new foods. Our chefs create recipes that are not only good for you, they taste great, too!
In this month’s Food as Medicine, we’re focusing on Heart Health with Chef Collette Haw, a classically trained Culinary Institute of America graduate with a passion for seasonal, sustainable cooking, and Toralben Patel, MD, a non-invasive cardiologist with the AdventHealth Cardiovascular Institute. As Chef Collette prepares recipes including Pomegranate & Kale Salad, Ginger Garlic Salmon and Brown Rice & Almond Pilaf, Dr. Patel will discuss simple, everyday actions you can take to improve your heart health.

This is a demonstration-style cooking program, so our in-person attendees should prepare to sit back, relax and let our chef prepare the meal while you enjoy the delicious items. All attendees, both online and in-person, will receive a booklet for the following recipes:

About Your Program Presenters
Chef Collette Haw
Chef Collette Haw is a classically trained Culinary Institute of America graduate. With a passion for seasonal, sustainable cooking, Chef Haw approaches her cooking with a passion for blending comfort-food-gone-healthy and ‘food as medicine’ philosophies.
Chef Haw spent several years operating her own successful meal delivery service out of Longwood—Collette’s Clean Eats—and as a private chef to a celebrity family in Atlanta before launching Nourish Coffee Bar + Kitchen at the Center for Health & Wellbeing. For its first three years in operation, she created the café’s beloved seasonal menus. Now a new mom, Chef Haw is returning to her passion of recipe development for local businesses and organizations in Central Florida.
Dr. Toralben Patel
Toralben Patel, MD, MPH, FACC, RPVI, FACP, is a non-invasive cardiologist with AdventHealth Cardiovascular Institute who is board certified in echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac CT, vascular ultrasound interpretation, cardiovascular diseases and internal medicine. Dr. Patel has a special interest in women’s heart disease, cardiac imaging and cardio-oncology, and she practices evidence-based medicine with an emphasis on providing the highest quality care to her patients. After completing her internal medicine residency at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood, PA, she undertook her fellowship training in cardiovascular diseases at The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education, where she served as Chief Fellow and was honored with the American Heart Association Women in Cardiology Trainee Award for Excellence. Dr. Patel also holds a Master of Public Health from Rutgers and is an active researcher and clinician.
