The idea of keeping chickens in your backyard is a growing trend, with several municipalities having passed ordinances that allow residents to do so. While store-bought eggs are completely safe and wholesome, backyard chickens are growing in popularity due to a desire for people to become reacquainted with food production and better understand where and how their food is made. In this on-demand program, UF/IFAS Livestock and Natural Resources Extension Agent JK Yarborough discusses the basics of keeping a small flock in your backyard.
By watching this program, you can expect to learn:
- why eggs are different colors;
- how long it takes for a chicken to start laying eggs;
- proper coop construction, equipment and techniques to make for easier keeping.

About the Program Presenter
JK Yarborough has been the Livestock and Natural Resources Extension Agent for Orange and Seminole Counties for 4 years. He grew up on his family’s cow-calf cattle ranch in Geneva FL where all cattle work is still done on horseback. After high school he attended Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton, GA for two years before transferring to the University of Florida. There he got his undergrad degree in Animal Science with a minor in Chemistry. In grad school at UF JK got his M.S. in Agronomy while working under Dr. Vendramini at the Range Cattle Research and Education Center. Right out of grad school JK went to work where he is today as the UF/IFAS Livestock and Natural Resources Extension Agent for Orange and Seminole Counties.
