The idea of keeping chickens in your backyard is a growing trend, with several municipalities having passed ordinances that allow residents to do so. While store-bought eggs are completely safe and wholesome, backyard chickens are growing in popularity due to a desire for people to become reacquainted with food production and better understand where and how their food is made. In this on-demand program, UF/IFAS Livestock and Natural Resources Extension Agent JK Yarborough discusses the basics of keeping a small flock in your backyard.

By watching this program, you can expect to learn:

  • why eggs are different colors;
  • how long it takes for a chicken to start laying eggs;
  • proper coop construction, equipment and techniques to make for easier keeping.

This program is presented by JK Yarborough and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation.
