Don’t let your fitness goals for 2021 fizzle out. Here are five tips to create active habits last the entire year.

1. Make fitness a priority this year

When you consider activities or goals that are important for the upcoming year, make your physical fitness a top priority. Busy schedules can make adding an exercise routine challenging but not impossible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends 150 minutes per week, which equals about 30 minutes per day during a work week. These minutes do not have to be accomplished all at once. The good news is that you can spread your activity out during the week — you can even break it up into smaller chunks of time during the day.

Morning workouts, walking during lunch, taking the stairs, bike riding in your neighborhood and visiting the gym are all activities that can count for your 30 minutes per day. You’ll feel great that you’re working towards your goals without altering your schedule. Plus, having your workout clothes, shoes, fitness trackers and water prepared will help you keep your workouts efficient. Write specific days and times to encourage and motivate yourself to commit to completing your quick workouts each day.

2. Start with small specific goals.

Some goals can be overwhelming whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned gym enthusiast. Choose a specific goal and then take small steps to accomplish that goal. If you’re not sure how to take small steps try working with a personal trainer for guidance. Certified personal trainers will customize your workouts using various strategies to ensure safe and effective progress. You will receive both instruction and encouragement from your trainer to help you reach your goals.

3. Add variety to your workout.

Avoid hitting a fitness plateau by adding variety to your workout routine. Join a new group exercise class, take an aerobics class, train for a sports event or marathon, play a friendly sports game, try mindfulness exercises such as yoga or join a virtual exercise program to collaborate with people around the world. There are plenty of options to ensure that your mind and body are challenged and engaged.

4. Find strength in numbers.

Meeting new people with similar health and fitness goals can be very motivating versus working out alone. Your friends, class members and fitness instructors will help you stay committed and accountable. Plus, working out with others can be a lot of fun. You can exchange workout tips and celebrate fitness goals.

 5. Reward yourself.

As you keep track of your progress throughout the year don’t forget to reward yourself. Feeling good and looking great are some rewards, but make a habit of doing something you enjoy to celebrate your accomplishments. Some rewards may include watching your favorite TV show after your weekly workouts, relaxing with a few chapters of your favorite book after an evening workout, enjoying a healthy dessert after an evening workout or booking a trip or event when you meet your weight loss goal. Friendly competition with friends can be a reward as well. Reaching a goal can mean winning a gift basket, gift card or cash. Giving yourself rewards can be motivating and help keep you on track all year.
