SUMMARY:Food as Medicine: Cooking for Heart Health
DESCRIPTION:Join CHWB Chefs and AdventHealth physicians for this innovative program from the Center for Health & Wellbeing.\n\n\nOne of the best things you can do for your health is learn to lower your risk for heart disease\, the leading cause of death for men\, women and Americans of most racial and ethnic groups. And the battle begins in the kitchen. What you eat can dramatically improve your health and decrease your chances of developing heart disease related illnesses\, including high blood pressure and high cholesterol. \nRather than focusing on what not to eat\, the Food as Medicine series\, a collaboration between the Winter Park Health Foundation and AdventHealth\, seeks to inspire you to learn to love new foods. Our chefs create recipes that are not only good for you\, they taste great\, too! \nIn this month’s Food as Medicine\, we’re focusing on Heart Health with Chef Collette Haw\, a classically trained Culinary Institute of America graduate with a passion for seasonal\, sustainable cooking\, and Toralben Patel\, MD\, a non-invasive cardiologist with the AdventHealth Cardiovascular Institute. As Chef Collette prepares recipes including Pomegranate & Kale Salad\, Ginger Garlic Salmon and Brown Rice & Almond Pilaf\, Dr. Patel will discuss simple\, everyday actions you can take to improve your heart health. \nYou have two options for attending this program – save your seat in the Nutrition Theatre or click here to register for our free webinar and watch it from home. Whether you’re watching from inside the Nutrition Theatre or from home\, you’ll also have the opportunity to share your questions and comments with Collette and Dr. Patel during the program. \nThis is a demonstration-style cooking program\, so our in-person attendees should prepare to sit back\, relax and let our chef prepare the meal while you enjoy the delicious items. All attendees\, both online and in-person\, will receive a booklet for the following recipes: \nPomegranate & Kale Salad \nGinger Garlic Salmon \nBrown Rice & Almond Pilaf \nThis program is presented by Chef Collette Haw and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation in collaboration with AdventHealth. \nCancelling Your Reservation: In order to receive a full refund\, participants must cancel their program registration at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled start of the program. Center for Health & Wellbeing’s Refund Policy \nAbout Your Program Presenters \nChef Collette Haw \nChef Collette Haw is a classically trained Culinary Institute of America graduate. With a passion for seasonal\, sustainable cooking\, Chef Haw approaches her cooking with a passion for blending comfort-food-gone-healthy and ‘food as medicine’ philosophies. \nChef Haw spent several years operating her own successful meal delivery service out of Longwood—Collette’s Clean Eats—and as a private chef to a celebrity family in Atlanta before launching Nourish Coffee Bar + Kitchen at the Center for Health & Wellbeing. For its first three years in operation\, she created the café’s beloved seasonal menus. Now a new mom\, Chef Haw is returning to her passion of recipe development for local businesses and organizations in Central Florida. \nDr. Toralben Patel \nToralben Patel\, MD\, MPH\, FACC\, RPVI\, FACP\, is a non-invasive cardiologist with AdventHealth Cardiovascular Institute who is board certified in echocardiography\, nuclear cardiology\, cardiac CT\, vascular ultrasound interpretation\, cardiovascular diseases and internal medicine. Dr. Patel has a special interest in women’s heart disease\, cardiac imaging and cardio-oncology\, and she practices evidence-based medicine with an emphasis on providing the highest quality care to her patients. After completing her internal medicine residency at Lankenau Medical Center in Wynnewood\, PA\, she undertook her fellowship training in cardiovascular diseases at The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education\, where she served as Chief Fellow and was honored with the American Heart Association Women in Cardiology Trainee Award for Excellence. Dr. Patel also holds a Master of Public Health from Rutgers and is an active researcher and clinician. \nAbout the Food as Medicine Series: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” isn’t just a quote from ancient Greek philosopher Hippocrates\, it’s a framework to healthy and healing eating that’s more relevant today than ever. Join CHWB Chefs and AdventHealth physicians for this innovative program from the Center for Health & Wellbeing. You’ll learn more about the intersection of food and medicine\, dive deep into the ways your food choices affect your health far beyond the numbers on your scale and learn easy recipes using new and interesting flavors and techniques.

With a mission to Unearth the Power of Food to Build Healthy Communities\, the 4 Roots Foundation is poised to make a huge impact in our local communities. \nSpace is limited so sign up today to save your spot! \nCancelling Your Reservation: In order to receive a full refund\, participants must cancel their program registration at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled start of the program. Center for Health & Wellbeing’s Refund Policy \nAbout Your Program Presenters: \nFollowing a 20-year career in health care\, John Rivers retired as president of a $1.5 billion company to pursue a lifelong dream of opening a restaurant. In 2009\, he created his first concept\, 4 Rivers Smokehouse\, which quickly became one of the fastest-growing restaurants in the Southeast. Since then\, the 4 Rivers business has grown to 22 locations in Florida\, including Rivers’ other concepts\, the Southern-inspired The COOP\, the Cantina Barbacoa Food Truck at Disney Springs and the farm-to-table 4Roots Café. 4 Rivers garnered national recognition\, including the title of “The South’s Best BBQ” by Southern Living magazine and the “#1 BBQ Chain” by MSN. \nBorn out of Rivers’ garage\, the “barbeque ministry” remains at the heart of the company’s mission to lift up those in need and help build better communities. The culmination of the 4R Foundation’s work\, the Orlando-based 4Roots Farm\, will serve as a community campus to inspire revolutionary change in Florida’s food system through education on sustainable and regenerative farming\, advancements in agriculture technology and research in culinary medicine via the launch of the Culinary Health Institute. \nAuthor of The Southern Cowboy Cookbook\, Rivers has been named one of the Restaurant Business magazine’s “The Power 20” elite leaders\, Restaurateur of the Year by Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association and Orlando Magazine’s “50 Most Powerful: 15 to Watch.” He has cooked at the prestigious James Beard House in New York City\, and was twice named a finalist for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award. He serves on the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Food Security Advisory Council and the Department of Agriculture Innovation Committee and is a member of the Florida Council of 100. \nMonica Aggarwal\, MD\, is an adjunct Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine in the University of Florida Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. She received her medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and subsequently went on to complete a residency in internal medicine at Tufts-New England Medical Center. She then completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of Maryland. Dr. Aggarwal’s own path to understanding the impact of nutrition in illness started soon after the birth of her third child\, when she developed an advanced form of rheumatoid arthritis. She was placed on medications that gave her severe side effects. It was only through learning about the microbiome (gut)\, its impact on the immune system and the role of nutrition in affecting the gut\, was she able to truly heal. Determined to change the face of medicine\, she left private practice and returned to academics in order to pursue research on the role of diet and to create an integrative cardiology practice focused on nutrition and lifestyle. \nDr. Aggarwal gives talks around the community and the country. She was named a “Next Generation Innovator” by Cardiology Today. Board certified in cardiology\, echocardiography\, nuclear cardiology and advanced cholesterol management\, she is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC)\, where she is a member of the nutrition council working on nutrition policies for the nation. She is the author of the book “Body on Fire: How Inflammation Triggers Chronic Illness and the Tools We Have to Fight It\,” which outlines prescriptions to help guide people to better health. She currently sees patients in Orlando\, Florida and via telehealth as part of Wholistic Cardiology and conducts research at the University of Florida. \nThis program is presented by 4 Roots and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation.
