SUMMARY:Food as Medicine: Nutritional Strategies for Managing PCOS
DESCRIPTION:Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a medical disorder that can cause irregular periods\, acne\, extra facial hair\, trouble getting pregnant\, weight gain and obesity. People with this condition also are at increased risk of obesity\, heart disease and diabetes. \nAnd it’s more common than you may think — approximately 5 to 8 percent of all women have PCOS. Most\, but not all\, people with PCOS have excess weight or obesity. \nThe good news is there are steps you can take to minimize the effects of PCOS and many of them begin in the kitchen. \nA well-balanced diet\, including non-starchy vegetables and fruits\, lean protein\, healthy carbs and low-fat dairy\, can help people with PCOS get healthier and prevent complications. Elimination of saturated fats\, processed meats and refined sugar is also recommended. \nIn this class\, explore how food can act as medicine in helping you live with PCOS and other gynecologic issues that affect women. Your guides through this conversation will be Omar Zwain\, MD\, a fellowship-trained\, board-certified\, minimally invasive gynecologic and robotic surgeon who sees patients at the Center for Health & Wellbeing\, and Allison Harrell\, a Registered Dietitian and Culinary Medicine Expert. \nYou have two options for attending this program – save your seat in the Nutrition Theatre or click here to register for our free webinar and watch it from home. Whether you’re watching from inside the Nutrition Theatre or from home\, you’ll also have the opportunity to share your questions and comments with Allison and Dr. Zwain during the program. \nThis is a demonstration-style cooking program\, so our in-person attendees should prepare to sit back\, relax and let our chef prepare the meal while you enjoy the delicious items (exact menu to be announced soon!). All attendees\, both online and in-person\, will receive a booklet for all prepared recipes. \nCancelling Your Reservation: In order to receive a full refund\, participants must cancel their program registration at least 72 hours prior to the scheduled start of the program. Center for Health & Wellbeing’s Refund Policy >>> \nThis program is presented by Dr. Omar Zwain of AdventHealth and Allison Harrell and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation in collaboration with AdventHealth. \nAbout the Presenters: \nAllison Harrell is a registered dietitian nutritionist and plant-based chef who has been passionate about food and nutrition for more than 20 years. She advanced her knowledge by becoming a certified Culinary Medicine Specialist\, certified in Weight Loss Management. Harrell believes that every time we eat\, it is an opportunity to promote our health. She incorporates culinary experiences with a science-based approach. Her programs and tools make a positive difference in the health of our communities by instilling confidence and knowledge in the kitchen. \nOmar Zwain\, MD\, is a fellowship-trained\, board-certified\, minimally invasive gynecologic and robotic surgeon. He offers women with fibroids and other gynecologic problems the best possible scientific evidence to guide and inform their treatment decisions\, and minimally invasive solutions when appropriate. Dr. Zwain strives to provide excellence in gynecologic care through evidence-based medicine and some of the most advanced\, minimally invasive gynecologic procedures. Dr. Zwain is fluent in both English and Arabic. \nAbout the Food as Medicine Series: “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” isn’t just a quote from ancient Greek philosopher Hippocrates\, it’s a framework to healthy and healing eating that’s more relevant today than ever. Join CHWB Chefs and AdventHealth physicians for this innovative program from the Center for Health & Wellbeing. You’ll learn more about the intersection of food and medicine\, dive deep into the ways your food choices affect your health far beyond the numbers on your scale and learn easy recipes using new and interesting flavors and techniques.

SUMMARY:Crystal Bowl Sound Meditation for Community + Connection
DESCRIPTION:Join Certified Meditation Instructor Camille Sacco for community + connection\, and to learn the basics of meditation and to experience a crystal bowl sound bath. \nPart meditation\, part listening exercise\, Sound Baths are healing musical performances played with crystal singing bowls and chimes. They can be very therapeutic because you are literally bathed in sound waves\, where you will enter a state of deep relaxation. Sound baths help facilitate shifts in our brainwaves by using entrainment. Entrainment synchronizes our brainwaves by providing a stable frequency which the brainwaves can attune to. By listening to the rhythm and frequencies of the crystal bowls\, we can downshift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness) and even reach theta (meditative state) where profound learning\, healing and growth can occur. \nThis sound healing experience is designed to clear and release negative energy\, open your heart\, and promote a quieter state of mind. The harmonious sounds are created to support your body’s natural healing processes while you recline on blankets and pillows. After the session\, you’ll leave feeling mentally and physically rested\, ready to enjoy the peace and tranquility of a healthy mind\, body and spirit. \nSpecial Instructions: Attendees can sit in a chair or on the floor for this program. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, towel\, or small blanket; chairs will be available for those who prefer to use one. The room can also be cool during this program\, so cold-sensitive participants may also want to bring a light jacket or sweater. All attendees are also encouraged to bring their own bottles of water. \nSpecial note: Beginning in 2024\, we will be charging a small fee for some of Camille’s meditation classes. The first session of each month will remain free\, so please use that as an opportunity to introduce friends to the practice of mindfulness and meditation. Space is limited so please reserve your spot for the free community class each month; and if you book a spot and can no longer attend\, please cancel your reservation to allow someone from our wait list to share in this experience. \nThis program is presented by Camille Sacco and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Presenter:    \nCamille Sacco is an American Institute of Health Care Professionals Mindfulness Coach and meditation instructor. She is also a graduate of the acclaimed Palouse Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course. Camille is the author of two self-help books\, “Hippiebanker: Bringing Peace\, Love and Spirituality to the Workplace” and her latest book\, “Firefly Culture: Illuminate Your Workplace by Tuning in to Mindfulness.” She leads fun and informative classes and workshops on mindful meditations and her coaching sessions are infused with down-to-Earth guidance. She is both informative and fun in her approach. Her goal is to help people tap in to the wisdom of their soul by cultivating daily practices that will inspire confidence in the pursuit of living their lives with a higher purpose. SUMMARY:“Empty Plates:” How the Hunger Relief Crisis Impacts Our Community
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of thought-provoking conversation and actionable ideas for helping our friends and neighbors.\n\n\nThe history of the global and U.S. national hunger relief movement has never been documented … until now. \nIn his new book\, “Empty Plates: The Evolution of Hunger Relief Until All Are Fed\,” Dave Krepcho draws upon the lessons learned over the course of more than three decades fighting hunger. You’re invited to a special author event to celebrate this new book and learn how we can all be a part of the solution. \nDave Krepcho dedicated 34 years in nonprofit sector leadership\, including serving as the President and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida for 17 years. Throughout his career\, he led teams to distribute over one billion meals\, generated hundreds of millions of dollars for hunger relief\, engaged thousands of thousands of volunteers\, created innovative programs and social entrepreneurial initiatives\, as well as job training and placement in the culinary industry. \n“Empty Plates” holds many important lessons to be learned. The book’s first section covers a worldwide review of hunger relief over the centuries until the 1960s. The second section delves deeper into U.S. domestic hunger relief and the national food bank movement. \nThe meal gap continues to grow\, with 38 million people in the U.S. deemed food insecure or otherwise hungry. \nBreaking stereotypes of who needs help is essential to engaging communities in any cause. This book shines a light on our neighbors seeking and receiving support. They often look like you and me. \nJoin us for an evening of thought-provoking conversation and actionable ideas for helping our friends and neighbors. After leaving full-time TV news in 2020\, Sweezey launched a career as a children’s book author\, public speaker and freelance TV reporter. Audience members will also have the opportunity to pose their questions on hunger relief. \nWith “Empty Plates\,” Krepcho hopes to share knowledge that will inspire and create change for the better and engage more people to make a difference. \nThis program is presented by Dave Krepcho and Amy Sweezey and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Presenters:   \nDave Krepcho dedicated 34 years in nonprofit sector leadership\, led teams to distribute over one billion meals\, generated hundreds of millions of dollars for hunger relief\, engaged thousands of thousands of volunteers\, created innovative programs and social entrepreneurial initiatives\, as well as job training and placement in the culinary industry. SUMMARY:All About Moringa
DESCRIPTION:In this program\, Melissa Golterman of Momma G Farms will explain the health benefits of moringa.\n\n\nMoringa is one of the hottest new superfoods\, but what is it and how can it benefit your health? \nMoringa oleifera is a tree from northern India that has edible leaves\, pods\, seeds and flowers and for centuries\, it has been considered a super-food around the world. Moringa has many nutritional and medicinal properties. Morgina is high in potassium\, vitamin C and antioxidant\, among other important vitamins and minerals. Plus\, it can be easily grown here in Central Florida. \nIn this program\, Melissa Golterman of Momma G Farms will explain the health benefits of moringa and teach you everything you need to know to nurture and harvest your own moringa leaves. In addition to all the tips and tricks you’ll learn\, your program fee also includes a moringa seedling to take home with you. \nThis program is presented by Melissa Goltermann and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Presenter:    \nMelissa Goltermann started her healing journey after 10 years of being on pain management due to a serious car accident. She found the medication was only masking her symptoms and she searched for ways to heal her body. Coming off the medication was not easy\, and her body is still healing. Moringa was the first thing she used to help in her healing journey. Her mission is to educate others on how plants can be a part of a healthy healing diet. She offers free classes to children and adults at her not-for-profit food forest farm Momma G Farms\, located in Eustis\, Florida. She has been growing and using Moringa for over 10 years.

SUMMARY:CHILL Chats: Supporting Child Development
DESCRIPTION:Healthy development begins at the start of a child’s life\, & the role of parents is enormous to help shape & support healthy\, happy children\n\n\nHealthy development begins at the start of a child’s life\, and the role of parents is enormous to help shape and support healthy and happy children. As parents\, it is important to understand the normal ranges of development\, including physical\, social\, emotional\, and intellectual areas and how to best support them as the new school year begins. All children develop at their own pace\, but it is important for parents to be able to provide appropriate expectations and support for their children at all ages and phases. \nLed by counselors from the CHILL program in partnership with Orange County Public Schools\, this educational seminar will provide the opportunity for parents to learn about the different stages of how children grow and develop throughout the span of childhood. Come join mental health professionals to discuss the importance of downtime and play as a way to enhance creativity\, presence\, connection\, and emotional regulation through these phases. We will also explore the ways that parental expectations can impact a child’s growth and development\, and how to practice self-awareness during the parenting journey and beyond. \nThis program is presented by OCPS CHILL Counselors and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Presenter:   \nThe CHILL (Community Help & Intervention in Life’s Lessons) program in Orange County Public Schools was founded in 1998 by the Winter Park Health Foundation in partnership with the 12 Orange County Public School serving Winter Park\, Maitland and Eatonville. CHILL provides free\, confidential\, in-school counseling to students and their families. It is part of a collection of school-based health and wellness services supported by WPHF called the Coordinated Youth Initiative (CYI). Other services include nurses\, nurse practitioners in school-based health centers\, and healthy school teams.

SUMMARY:Basic Pointed Pen Calligraphy PLUS
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited to participate in an in-depth\, three-part series that will provide you with the guidance & time needed to develop this skill.\n\n\nEver watch a calligrapher write and think\, “I wish I could do that!” Get ready to unlock the myths of creating this beautiful art form. Calligraphy is simply knowing how to put together basic strokes to create letters and then words. You will learn these strokes and how to put it all together so that you can confidently make your own cards\, gifts and other special projects. \nYou’re invited to participate in an in-depth\, three-part series that will provide you with the guidance and time needed to develop this skill. \nBy participating in this class\, all the basics of pointed pen calligraphy are covered\, under the careful tutelage of calligrapher Jana Ricci.  There is a commitment to meet once a week for 3 consecutive weeks so there is time for learning\, practicing\, critiquing and producing projects in greater depth. The greatest gift in this course is the opportunity for critique. Many times\, bad habits are formed\, which can derail a whole project. \nYour $60 program fee ($20/class) includes all materials\, a practice book\, your own pen and ink\, and ideas for projects. By the end of this course\, you’ll learn the skills needed to master lower case and capital letters\, as well as an introduction and inspiration to create your own style and flourishes. \nProgram note: You will register once for all three classes (October 15\, 22\, and 29). We are unable to offer single class registration since each class will build upon skills from the previous lessons.    \nThis program is presented by Jana Ricci and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Presenter:    \nJana is a self-taught artist and when people took up various new hobbies during COVID\, she honed her talents towards calligraphy. Her philosophy is “Words Matter” so let’s make words look pretty. Calligraphy also gave her the outlet she yearned for at that time– to slow down. She discovered it to be great for relaxing\, reflecting and making something beautiful.

SUMMARY:Crystal Bowl Sound Meditation for Community + Connection
DESCRIPTION:Join Certified Meditation Instructor Camille Sacco for community + connection throughout the month.\n\n\nJoin Certified Meditation Instructor Camille Sacco for community + connection\, and to learn the basics of meditation and to experience a crystal bowl sound bath. SUMMARY:Projective Dreamworks: A Four-Part Series
DESCRIPTION:Puzzled by your dreams? With Judy Minear\, a projective dream work expert\, you’ll unpack the symbolic language of the “theater of the night”.\n\n\nA note about this program series: After registering for the first class in this four-part series\, attendees are expected to attend all four sessions (October 3\, 10\, 17\, & 24) in order to gain the most out of this program. If you cannot attend all four sessions\, please allow someone else to register for this limited-capacity program. \nAre you puzzled by your dreams? With Judy Minear\, a projective dream work expert with a decade of experience in dream group facilitation\, you’ll unpack the symbolic language of the “theater of the night.” Over the course of four group sessions\, you will build on the basic tenet that all dreams come in the service of health and wholeness. As you mine the wisdom expressed in your dreams\, you’ll build a better relationship with yourself and others. Dreams offer guidance\, clues\, inspiration and multiple meanings. The group process provides a supportive path to unearth the clues from our own unconscious. \nIn this series\, you can expect to learn: \n• How to improve dream recall \n• Two methods of working a dream \n• How to tap into the depths of symbols \nProgram notes: Please bring notes about a recent dream to class\, even if it is a fragment. The class is based on the seminal work of Jeremy Taylor. His book “The Wisdom of Your Dreams” is helpful but not necessary. \nThis program is presented by Judy Minear and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Presenter: \nJudy Minear has participated in Dream groups for over 20 years. She attended the annual Haden Summer Dream Conference for seven years. She has been the current facilitator for an ongoing dream group for seven years. She studied with Jeremy Taylor as well as others who have been instrumental in the International Association for the Study of Dreams. She credits her curiosity for her deep interest in dreams. Unpacking dream symbols and working with shadows feels like a calling to her. After multiple experiences in Egypt\, she developed an active interest in the mysteries. She has offered this class at the Rollins STARS venue as well as the Winter Park Library. She brings a deep understanding as well as a warmth and a sense of humor to the process of Projective Dream Work.
