SUMMARY:Eating for Healthy Weight
DESCRIPTION:Join Laura Varich\, MD\, a certified lifestyle medicine physician\, to learn research-backed tips for taking control of your health.\n\n\nWe all know that it can be difficult to achieve and maintain a healthy body weight. But it turns out that it is not our lack of exercise\, or our lack of willpower that drives weight gain; rather\, weight gain is in large part driven by cultural\, environmental\, and evolutionary influences. And while many elements conspire to cause weight gain\, recent medical research tells us how factors such as calorie density\, your microbiome\, and the timing of your meals and snacks can be optimized to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. \nIt is time to look past the fads and quick fixes and focus on the simple lifestyle changes that will best provide you with a healthy weight and improved overall health for life. Join Laura Varich\, MD\, a certified lifestyle medicine physician\, to learn research-backed tips for taking control of your health. Get empowered while also sampling some recommended foods for healthy weight and learning how to easily incorporate them into your diet. \nProgram note: you have two opportunities to attend this class — January 24\, 1 – 2 PM or February 8\, 6 – 7 PM (please note: an earlier version of this listing had the wrong time listed. The correct time for the Feb. 8 class is 6 – 7 PM).  \nCancelling Your Reservation: In order to receive a full refund\, participants must cancel their program registration at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled start of the program. Center for Health & Wellbeing’s Refund Policy. \nThis program is presented by Laura Varich and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Presenter: \nLaura Varich\, MD\, is the founder of Fresh Physician (FreshPhysician.com)\, a website that grew out of a desire to turn the tide on the chronic diseases such as weight gain\, heart disease\, cancer\, diabetes\, high blood pressure\, depression\, and many others that have become rampant in our society today. Dr. Varich’s in-depth research within the medical literature revealed that there is hope for improved health for us all. Her life’s goal is to share the information that she discovered on how whole-food\, plant-based eating is the way to turn around chronic disease\, and also how simple and delicious this way of eating can be.

SUMMARY:Crystal Bowl Sound Meditation for Community + Connection
DESCRIPTION:Join Certified Meditation Instructor Camille Sacco for community + connection throughout the month.\n\n\nJoin Certified Meditation Instructor Camille Sacco for community + connection\, and to learn the basics of meditation and to experience a crystal bowl sound bath. \nPart meditation\, part listening exercise\, Sound Baths are healing musical performances played with crystal singing bowls and chimes. They can be very therapeutic because you are literally bathed in sound waves\, where you will enter a state of deep relaxation. Sound baths help facilitate shifts in our brainwaves by using entrainment. Entrainment synchronizes our brainwaves by providing a stable frequency which the brainwaves can attune to. By listening to the rhythm and frequencies of the crystal bowls\, we can downshift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness) and even reach theta (meditative state) where profound learning\, healing and growth can occur. \nThis sound healing experience is designed to clear and release negative energy\, open your heart\, and promote a quieter state of mind. The harmonious sounds are created to support your body’s natural healing processes while you recline on blankets and pillows. After the session\, you’ll leave feeling mentally and physically rested\, ready to enjoy the peace and tranquility of a healthy mind\, body and spirit. \nSpecial Instructions: Attendees can sit in a chair or on the floor for this program. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, towel\, or small blanket; chairs will be available for those who prefer to use one. The room can also be cool during this program\, so cold-sensitive participants may also want to bring a light jacket or sweater. All attendees are also encouraged to bring their own bottles of water. \nSpecial note: Beginning in 2024\, we will be charging a small fee for some of Camille’s meditation classes. The first session of each month will remain free\, so please use that as an opportunity to introduce friends to the practice of mindfulness and meditation. Space is limited so please reserve your spot for the free community class each month; and if you book a spot and can no longer attend\, please cancel your reservation to allow someone from our wait list to share in this experience. \nThis program is presented by Camille Sacco and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Presenter:    \nCamille Sacco is an American Institute of Health Care Professionals Mindfulness Coach and meditation instructor. She is also a graduate of the acclaimed Palouse Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course. Camille is the author of two self-help books\, “Hippiebanker: Bringing Peace\, Love and Spirituality to the Workplace” and her latest book\, “Firefly Culture: Illuminate Your Workplace by Tuning in to Mindfulness.” She leads fun and informative classes and workshops on mindful meditations and her coaching sessions are infused with down-to-Earth guidance. She is both informative and fun in her approach.
SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn for Parents: Learning about Child and Adolescent Development
DESCRIPTION:On February 26\, join counselors from the OCPS CHILL program for an educational seminar about the stages of how children grow & develop.\n\n\nHealthy development begins at the start of a child’s life\, and the role of parents is enormous to help shape and support healthy and happy children. As parents\, it is important to understand the normal ranges of development\, including physical\, social\, emotional\, and intellectual areas. All children develop at their own pace\, but it is important for parents to be able to provide appropriate expectations and support for their children at all ages and phases. As children move into the adolescent phases\, there are even more challenges that arise with fostering healthy relationships and preparing teenagers for adulthood. \nLed by counselors from the Orange County Public Schools CHILL program\, this educational seminar will provide the opportunity for parents to learn about the different stages of how children grow and develop throughout the span of childhood and adolescence\, including emotional\, physical\, social\, and intellectual development. \nCome join mental health professionals to discuss the importance of downtime and play as a way to enhance creativity\, presence\, connection\, and emotional regulation through these phases. We will also explore the ways that parental expectations can impact a child’s growth and development\, and how to practice self-awareness during the parenting journey and beyond. \nBring your lunch from home or stop by Nourish Coffee Bar + Kitchen on your way in\, and spend your lunch hour enriching your family’s relationships. \nThis program is presented by CHILL Counselors and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Presenter:    \nThe CHILL (Community Help & Intervention in Life’s Lessons) program in Orange County Public Schools was founded in 1998 by the Winter Park Health Foundation in partnership with the 12 Orange County Public School serving Winter Park\, Maitland and Eatonville. CHILL provides free\, confidential\, in-school counseling to students and their families. It is part of a collection of school-based health and wellness services supported by WPHF called the Coordinated Youth Initiative (CYI). Other services include nurses\, nurse practitioners in school-based health centers\, and healthy school teams.
