SUMMARY:CHWB Book Club\, Session 2: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer
DESCRIPTION:Join us for CHWB Book Club\, Session 2: Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer on Thursday\, April 21 at 11 AM in Community Conference A.\n\n\nA book club can have several goals at once\, including the social aspect of getting together with others in a relaxed setting and the focused activity of discussing various elements of a particular book that everyone in the group has (mostly) read. A recent survey by BookBrowse of over 5\,500 individuals engaged in book clubs across the country reported that survey responders highlighted both the value of discussion focused on the chosen book AND the social nature of the group. In this second session of our yearlong CHWB Book Club\, you’ll join Dr. Annette Kelly\, an avid reader\, and the board president of Neighbors Network\, who aims to help you do both! \nAbout this Session’s Featured Book: \nJane Goodall\, renowned English primatologist and anthropologist and the world’s foremost expert on chimpanzees\, says of Robin Wall Kimmerer’s collection of essays\, “… it’s the way she captures beauty that I love the most — images of giant cedars and wild strawberries\, a forest in the rain\, and a meadow of fragrant sweetgrass…”   In “Braiding Sweetgrass\,” Robin Wall Kimmerer’s stories are both scientific (she is a scientist and Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology) and mythical (she is a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation)\, showing us how the facts of science can be enriched by the ancient knowledge of indigenous people. Author Elizabeth Gilbert calls this book “a hymn of love to the world.” Read it and then join us to share and discover new insights into the natural world around us. \nSpecial Note: Participants are asked to purchase the paperback of the featured book prior to the program’s start date. “Braiding Sweet Grass” by Robin Wall Kimmerer\, was published in 2013 by Milkweed Editions\, a non-profit publishing company\, and it is available on Kindle\, Audible as well as new and used from various vendors. Book clubs work well when participants have read the book\, but this is not a requirement. Being open to the opinions and reflections of others is important\, as is staying on topic. Other elements of a “good” discussion: making room for everyone who wishes to speak\, being attentive when others are speaking\, not interrupting\, or arguing\, and encouraging less talkative members to join in. \nMark Your Calendars and Stay Tuned: The CHWB Book Club will meet on the following dates in 2022: June 16\, August 18\, October 20 and December 15. Book selection details and registration options to come! This program is presented by Dr. Annette Kelly and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nCancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. Canceling your reservation for this program is especially important as most of our programs have limited capacities. Cancelling can be done in two easy ways: by calling 407.644.2492 and selecting Option 1\, then Option 3 to speak to a representative or by using the online ticket cancellation option in your original confirmation email from Eventbrite. \nBy participating in this program\, you agree to CHWB’s Gracious Space policy. \nAbout the Program Presenter \nAnnette Kelly currently volunteers as the board president of Neighbors Network\, a local non-profit\, whose mission is the independence\, engagement\, and connectedness of older adults in our community. She is also a retired nurse practitioner and nursing professor with experience locally as the former CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association. She was the former assistant professor of Nursing at Florida Southern College. Kelly is an avid reader who has been married 58 years and enjoys spending time with her four children and four grandchildren.

SUMMARY:Mindfulness and Meditation: Non-Judging and Acceptance (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for Mindfulness and Meditation: Non-Judging and Acceptance on Monday\, April 18\, at 7 PM in Community Conference Center.\n\n\nSpecial Note: Participants are encouraged to attend each week session of the four-week program\, but it is not a requirement. You may sign up for any of the four programs without attending the others. \nThis four-week program with Meditation Instructor Camille Sacco will introduce you to the concepts of mindfulness and meditation. You’ll learn practical tips and simple tools to transform your home and work life into the place it deserves to be. Each week\, you’ll learn a little something different about mindfulness and meditation. \nEach week\, you’ll discuss two attitudes and how they relate to mindfulness. You will also practice a meditation and have time at the end of the class for discussion and takeaways. Together\, this will constitute the foundation upon which you will be able to build a strong mindful meditation practice of your own. \nIn addition to meditations\, you’ll also experience a Crystal Bowl Sound Bath. Part meditation\, part listening exercise\, Sound Baths are healing musical performances played with crystal singing bowls and chimes. They can be very therapeutic because you are literally bathed in sound waves\, where you will enter a state of deep relaxation. Sound baths help facilitate shifts in our brainwaves by using entrainment. Entrainment synchronizes our brainwaves by providing a stable frequency which the brainwaves can attune to. By listening to the rhythm and frequencies of the crystal bowls\, we can downshift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness) and even reach theta (meditative state) where profound learning\, healing and growth can occur. \nIn week three\, you will cover: \n\nAttitudes: Non-Judging and Acceptance\nMeditation: Mountain Meditation\n\nSpecial Instructions: Attendees can sit in a chair or on the floor for this program. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, towel\, or small blanket; chairs will be available for those who prefer to use one. The room can also be cool during this program\, so cold-sensitive participants may also want to bring a light jacket or sweater. All attendees are also encouraged to bring their own bottles of water. \nThis program is presented by Camille Sacco and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. She is also a graduate of the acclaimed Palouse Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course. Sacco is the author of two self-help books\, “Hippiebanker: Bringing Peace\, Love and Spirituality to the Workplace” and her latest book\, “Firefly Culture: Illuminate Your Workplace by Tuning in to Mindfulness.” She leads fun and informative classes and workshops on mindful meditations and her coaching sessions are infused with down-to-Earth guidance. DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for “Story of the Blues: Finding Your Voice Through a Historic Genre” on Wednesday\, April 13\, 2022 at 6 PM.\n\n\nThe Blues is a unique style of music with a rich history originating from African American field hollers. As the nation celebrates Black History Month in February\, this program is the perfect way to honor this uniquely American art form. This 90-minute workshop will feature the history of the Blues and teach participants how to write their own Blues style song. You’ll also enjoy performances by a live vocalist and pianist! \nThis program is presented by a CFCArts Teaching Artist and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation in collaboration with CFCArts. \nCancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. SUMMARY:Mindfulness and Meditation: Beginner's Mind and Trust (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for Mindfulness and Meditation: Beginner’s Mind and Trust on Monday\, April 11 2022 at 7 PM in Community Conference Center.\n\n\nSpecial Note: Participants are encouraged to attend each week session of the four-week program\, but it is not a requirement. \nIn week two\, you will cover: \n\nAttitudes: Beginner’s Mind and Trust\nMeditation: Body Scan\n\nSpecial Instructions: Attendees can sit in a chair or on the floor for this program. \n About the Program Presenter \nCamille Sacco is an American Institute of Health Care Professionals Mindfulness Coach and meditation instructor. Communication is the key to educating and creating change. \nIn this April IDEAS Hive\, Su Young Choi\, Ph.D.\, a professor of Environmental Communication at Stetson University\, discusses the environmental activism that took place in South Korea and what that movement looks like\, why it was successful and how we can replicate it by properly communicating environmental ideas to the public. Millions of people across the nation serve as care partners for a family member\, whether it is an elderly parent\, a spouse\, a special needs child or another relative. SUMMARY:Mindfulness and Meditation: Non-striving and Patience (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for Mindfulness and Meditation: Non-striving and Patience on Monday\, April 4\, 2022 at 7 PM in Community Conference Center.\n\n\nSpecial Note: Participants are encouraged to attend each week session of the four-week program\, but it is not a requirement. \nIn week one\, you will cover: \n\nAttitudes: Non-striving and Patience.\nMeditation: Awareness of Breath\n\nSpecial Instructions: Attendees can sit in a chair or on the floor for this program. \nCancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. \n About the Program Presenter \nCamille Sacco is an American Institute of Health Care Professionals Mindfulness Coach and meditation instructor. She is both informative and fun in her approach.
