SUMMARY:Empowered Patient Series: Environment
DESCRIPTION:In this session of the Empowered Patient series\, learn how to create a nurturing\, healthy environment for your life.\n\n\nOne of the most important things you can do to improve your overall health and wellbeing is to embrace the power of education. Learning about proven strategies\, philosophies\, and best practices will empower you to make positive\, meaningful\, and most importantly\, lasting changes to your lifestyle. \nThis special series\, presented in collaboration between the Winter Park Health Foundation and AdventHealth\, is designed to give you the tools you need to get started on this journey. Throughout this seven-week series of workshops\, you’ll learn the latest in healthy living research from those studying it deeply – AdventHealth University Community Health Nursing students. \nEach week\, the NURS440 students\, in collaboration with their instructors\, these future leaders in health care will present the latest information on health-related topics\, organized under the umbrella of the renowned CREATION Health principles. Each session will also kick off with useful screenings\, such as blood pressure\, heart rate\, oxygen saturation\, etc. \nWe invite you to join us for one\, two or all seven of these interactive sessions\, held in the Center for Health & Wellbeing’s Healthy Living Experience\, and start improving your health today. The sessions will follow this schedule: \n\nSeptember 22: Choice\nSeptember 29: Rest (rescheduled for Oct. 6)\nOctober 6: Environment\nOctober 13: Activity\nOctober 20: Trust\nOctober 27: Interpersonal Relationships & Outlook\nNovember 3: Nutrition\n\nOn October 6\, we’ll focus on: Rest + Environment: \nRest is the restoration of your body\, mind and spirit. Your best rest includes a good night’s sleep and making time to relax daily\, weekly and yearly. \nWe tend to associate the word “appointment” with structured and productive events such as meetings\, check-ups and interviews. Sleep and relaxation are unstructured\, seemingly unproductive events; they seem like the opposite of appointments. Because of this\, it can be easy to think of rest as unimportant. For a whole and healthy life\, rest should be a top priority. \nRelaxation also needs a set time: daily\, weekly and annually. At each level\, the key is to choose reasonable and refreshing activities. These could be as simple as finding time to go for a walk at work or taking a day of rest each week. What is considered restful may vary from person to person\, so it is important to be genuine in your choice. \nIn this session\, learn how to recognize when it’s time to rest and get strategies for incorporating it into your everyday life. \nPlus\, Environment lies outside of your body and affects what takes place inside your body. What you perceive through your senses impacts your well-being. \nThis is true about our larger environment (the air we breathe and the water we drink) and our personal environment (light\, sound\, aroma and touch). It is easy to understand how the former affects us. Our bodies often respond in obvious ways to things that are not good for us. What is less obvious is the effect that our personal environment can have upon the mind. \nIn order to live well\, we must choose an environment that elicits positive responses from us. We have to maximize the positive and minimize the negative. \nIn this session\, learn how to create a nurturing\, healthy environment for your life.

SUMMARY:Projective Dream Work – A Four-Part Series
DESCRIPTION:Unpack the symbolic language of the “theater of the night” over the course of four small group sessions.\n\n\nA note about this program series: After registering for the first class in this four-part series\, attendees are expected to attend all four sessions in order to gain the most out of this program. If you cannot attend all four sessions\, please allow someone else to register for this limited-capacity program. \nAre you puzzled by your dreams? With Judy Minear\, a projective dream work expert with almost a decade of experience in dream group facilitation\, you’ll unpack the symbolic language of the “theater of the night.” Over the course of four group sessions\, you will build on the basic tenet that all dreams come in the service of health and wholeness. As you mine the wisdom expressed in your dreams\, you’ll build a better relationship with yourself and others. Dreams offer guidance\, clues\, inspiration and multiple meanings. The group process provides a supportive path to unearth the clues from our own unconscious. \nIn this series\, you can expect to learn: \n• How to improve dream recall \n• Two methods of working a dream \n• How to tap into the depths of symbols \n  \nProgram notes: Please bring notes about a recent dream to class\, even if it is a fragment. The class is based on the seminal work of Jeremy Taylor. His book “The Wisdom of Your Dreams” is helpful but not necessary. \nThis program is presented by Judy Minear and is hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout Your Program Presenter \nJudy Minear has participated in Dream groups for over 20 years. She attended the annual Haden Summer Dream Conference for seven years. She has been the current facilitator for an ongoing dream group for seven years. She studied with Jeremy Taylor as well as others who have been instrumental in the International Association for the Study of Dreams. She credits her curiosity for her deep interest in dreams. Unpacking dream symbols and working with shadows feels like a calling to her. After multiple experiences in Egypt\, she developed an active interest in the mysteries. She has offered this class at the Rollins STARS venue as well as the Winter Park Library. She brings a deep understanding as well as a warmth and a sense of humor to the process of Projective Dream Work.

SUMMARY:IDEAS Hive: Rise Above Plastics: Stopping Plastic at its Source
DESCRIPTION:The monthly IDEAS Hive meetings allow experts from several different topics to educate you on environmental issues.\n\n\nThe Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean\, waves and beaches\, for all people\, through a powerful activist network. What We Fight For: Plastic Pollution\, Ocean Protection\, Beach Access\, Coastal Preservation and Clean Water. \nThe mission statement for the Surfrider Foundation’s Rise Above Plastics program includes advocating for the reduction of single-use plastics and the recycling of all plastics. Source reduction is the Foundation’s primary goal and recycling is secondary. At its beach cleanups\, the majority of the material removed from the beach is single-use plastic and Surfrider Foundation chapters often seek ways to recycle plastics and other materials that are not accepted in local curbside recycling programs. \nThe Surfrider Foundation first launched the Ocean Friendly Restaurants (OFR) program in 2013 with Surfrider’s Huntington Beach chapter. The OFR program quickly expanded throughout the U.S.\, becoming a nationally recognized program in 2018 and has recruited 750+ restaurants nationwide. The OFR program recognizes restaurants that are committed to cutting out wasteful single-use plastic and offer a simple\, straightforward framework to help them make sustainable choices for our ocean. The result is a community of eco-conscious restaurants\, activists\, and patrons that support a healthy lifestyle not only for us but also for our planet. The larger the Surfrider Foundation grows its network of Ocean Friendly leaders\, the more mainstream the concept of plastic-free becomes. \nSpecial Note: Learning\, engaging\, and finding solutions. The monthly IDEAS Hive meetings allow experts from several different topics to educate you on environmental issues before inviting you to produce your own local solutions. \nThis program is presented by Nicole Smith and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation in collaboration with IDEAS For Us. \nAbout the Program Presenters \nNicole Smith: Ocean Friendly Restaurant Coordinator (Orlando Chapter – Surfrider Foundation) \nAbout the Presenting Organization \nIDEAS For Us brings in experts on environmental topics and allows them to educate our audience\, equipping them with the knowledge they need to make innovative solutions to climate change. They then engage the audience in a conversation about how to solve these issues with localized action.

Dr. Aggarwal’s own path to understanding the impact of nutrition in illness started soon after the birth of her third child\, when she developed an advanced form of rheumatoid arthritis. She was placed on medications that gave her severe side effects. It was only through learning about the microbiome (gut)\, its impact on the immune system and the role of nutrition in affecting the gut\, was she able to truly heal. Determined to change the face of medicine\, she left private practice and returned to academics in order to pursue research on the role of diet and to create an integrative cardiology practice focused on nutrition and lifestyle. \nDr. Aggarwal gives talks around the community and the country. She was named a “Next Generation Innovator” by Cardiology Today. Board certified in cardiology\, echocardiography\, nuclear cardiology and advanced cholesterol management\, she is a fellow of the American College of Cardiology (ACC)\, where she is a member of the nutrition council working on nutrition policies for the nation. She is the author of the book “Body on Fire: How Inflammation Triggers Chronic Illness and the Tools We Have to Fight It\,” which outlines prescriptions to help guide people to better health. She currently sees patients in Orlando\, Florida and via telehealth as part of Wholistic Cardiology and conducts research at the University of Florida. \nAllison Harrell is a registered dietitian nutritionist and plant-based chef who has been passionate about food and nutrition for more than 20 years. Her programs and tools make a positive difference in the health of our communities by instilling confidence and knowledge in the kitchen.

SUMMARY:Cultivating Healthy Boundaries for a Happier Life
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for “Cultivating Healthy Boundaries for a Happier Life” on Tuesday\, September 27 at 11:30 AM.\n\n\nEveryone has a built-in alarm system that tells us when our boundaries are being or have been crossed. For example\, if someone gets near you physically\, you take a step back. But what about your emotional boundaries? If someone asks you to do something you’re not comfortable with\, does your alarm sound? Sometimes through conditioning including family or social pressures\, that alarm — which is like a muscle — can grow weak or faint. You may struggle to even hear it\, or not know how to respond. \nJoin Licensed Mental Health Counselor Jill Hamilton Buss as she helps you explore your boundaries and learn ways to strengthen them\, including how to handle chronic boundary crossers – think well-meaning parents\, partners\, siblings or adult children. Like healthy physical boundaries\, healthy emotional boundaries can protect you. Join to learn more about the important role they play in keeping you healthy\, centered and safe. \nIn this program\, you can expect to walk away with the following lessons: \n\nLearn to identify ways your body tells you a boundary has been crossed\nLearn strategies to shut down boundary crossers before they cross again\nDiscover what your priorities have to do with boundaries and gain more clarity and energy\n\nProgram Notes: Participants should be prepared for this program with a journal or paper and a pen for note taking. \nCanceling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. SUMMARY:Crystal Bowl Sound Meditation for Community + Connection - Sept 26\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Crystal Bowl Sound Meditation for Community + Connection” on Monday\, September 26 at 7 PM.\n\n\nJoin Certified Meditation Instructor Camille Sacco for community + connection to learn the basics of meditation and to experience a crystal bowl sound bath. \nPart meditation\, part listening exercise\, Sound Baths are healing musical performances played with crystal singing bowls and chimes. They can be very therapeutic because you are literally bathed in sound waves\, where you will enter a state of deep relaxation. Sound baths help facilitate shifts in our brainwaves by using entrainment. Entrainment synchronizes our brainwaves by providing a stable frequency which the brainwaves can attune to. By listening to the rhythm and frequencies of the crystal bowls\, we can downshift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness) and even reach theta (meditative state) where profound learning\, healing and growth can occur. \nThis sound healing experience is designed to clear and release negative energy\, open your heart\, and promote a quieter state of mind. The harmonious sounds are created to support your body’s natural healing processes while you recline on blankets and pillows. After the session\, you’ll leave feeling mentally and physically rested\, ready to enjoy the peace and tranquility of a healthy mind\, body and spirit. \nSpecial Instructions: Attendees can sit in a chair or on the floor for this program. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, towel\, or small blanket; chairs will be available for those who prefer to use one. The room can also be cool during this program\, so cold-sensitive participants may also want to bring a light jacket or sweater. All attendees are also encouraged to bring their own bottles of water. \nThis program is presented by Camille Sacco and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \n  \nAbout the Program Presenter \nCamille Sacco is an American Institute of Health Care Professionals Mindfulness Coach and meditation instructor. She is also a graduate of the acclaimed Palouse Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course. Sacco is the author of two self-help books\, “Hippiebanker: Bringing Peace\, Love and Spirituality to the Workplace” and her latest book\, “Firefly Culture: Illuminate Your Workplace by Tuning in to Mindfulness.” She leads fun and informative classes and workshops on mindful meditations and her coaching sessions are infused with down-to-Earth guidance. She is both informative and fun in her approach. SUMMARY:Empowered Patient Series: Choice
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for “Empowered Patient Series: Choice ” on Thursday\, September 22 at 2 PM.\n\n\nOne of the most important things you can do to improve your overall health and wellbeing is to embrace the power of education. The sessions will follow this schedule: \n\nSeptember 22: Choice\nSeptember 29: Rest\nOctober 6: Environment\nOctober 13: Activity\nOctober 20: Trust\nOctober 27: Interpersonal Relationships & Outlook\nNovember 3: Nutrition\n\n  \nOn September 22\, we’ll focus on Choice. \nChoice is the power to control your life. Consistently making wise decisions is key to becoming the person you were created to be. The decisions people make (good and bad) are constantly changing the world around us. But Choice doesn’t originate in the world around us. It begins within the mind\, in the frontal lobe to be exact. This is where our judgment\, reasoning\, social norms and long-term planning take place. These all contribute to making healthy\, life-giving choices. Human reasoning and planning capabilities are more powerful and complex than those of other species\, which allows for informed decision making. \nStudies have shown that people who believe they have control over their own lives are healthier\, happier and live longer. This is the power of Choice at work. This belief is reflected in everything they do – the goals they set\, the habits they form and the balance they find in their lives. \nIn this session\, learn how to harness the power of choice to control your life. \nCancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. Cancelling can be done in two simple ways: by calling 407.644.2492 and selecting Option 1\, then Option 3 to speak to a representative or by using the online ticket cancellation option in your original confirmation email from Eventbrite.

SUMMARY:In the Kitchen with Edible Orlando: Low Glycemic Cooking
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “In the Kitchen with Edible Orlando: Low Glycemic Cooking ” on Tuesday\, September 20 at 11 AM.\n\n\nThe Glycemic Index (GI) is a system doctors use to measure carbohydrates in specific foods and to quantify how these foods raise blood sugar levels. In other words – not all carbs are created equal\, and this set of guidelines helps people swap foods higher on the GI scale with alternatives that have lower numbers. Numerous studies have shown low GI diets can reduce blood sugar levels (something especially important for those with diabetes)\, lower the risk of heart disease\, aid in weight loss\, and lower cholesterol. One of the best parts of low glycemic cooking is it’s easy to follow\, once you learn which swaps to make. In this live\, interactive cooking program\, Edible Orlando Magazine Editor Katie Farmand will demonstrate delicious recipes highlighting low GI foods while inspiring you to focus on your health\, starting in the kitchen. \nWhile attending this program\, participants will receive a booklet for the following demonstrated recipes: \n\nGinger broth with chicken meatballs\nBarley Tabbouleh\nDark chocolate-nut clusters\n\nThis is a demonstration-style cooking program\, so prepare to sit back\, relax and let our chef prepare the meal while you enjoy delicious items. \nPlease note: Registration for all cooking programs close 72 hours in advance so our chefs have time to prepare ingredients accordingly. No walk-ins allowed. \nThis program is presented by Katie Farmand and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation in collaboration with Edible Orlando. \nCancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. Canceling your reservation for this program is especially important as most of our programs have limited capacities. Cancelling can be done in two easy ways: by calling 407.644.2492 and selecting Option 1\, then Option 3 to speak to a representative or by using the online ticket cancellation option in your original confirmation email from Eventbrite. \nBy participating in this program\, you agree to CHWB’s Gracious Space policy. \nAbout the Program Presenter \nKatie Farmand has been the editor of Edible Orlando magazine for the last 11 years. She is a recipe developer and is the co-author of “Field to Feast” and “Good Catch\,” cookbooks with a focus on Florida farms and seafood. \nAbout the Presenting Organization \nEdible Orlando magazine provides recipes\, tips\, hyperlocal food stories and more. They tell the stories of the Central Florida food scene. The magazine is rooted in the notion that saving room in our busy lives and tight budgets to eat a little more local food has great benefits. Buying real food from locally owned businesses strengthens the economy\, supports Florida’s farmers and fishermen\, and keeps the community and the environment healthy. And when you sit down at the table with your friends and family – either at home or at your favorite restaurant – you can really taste the difference.
