SUMMARY:Mindfulness and Meditation: Beginner's Mind and Trust
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for “Mindfulness and Meditation: Beginner’s Mind and Trust” on Monday\, August 15 at 7 PM.\n\n\nSpecial Note: Participants are encouraged to attend each weekly session of the four-week program\, but it is not a requirement. You may sign up for any of the four programs without attending the others. \nThis three-week program with Meditation Instructor Camille Sacco will introduce you to the concepts of mindfulness and meditation. You’ll learn practical tips and simple tools to transform your home and work life into the place it deserves to be. Each week\, you’ll learn a little something different about mindfulness and meditation. \nIn order to cultivate a true understanding and get the most out of your practice\, it’s important for your mind to be open and receptive. This will ensure that learning and change can occur. With that\, the attitude you bring to your practice is crucial. It is the soil in which we will effectively cultivate daily practices that will inspire confidence in the pursuit of living our lives with a higher purpose. \nEach session\, we will discuss two attitudes and how they relate to mindfulness. We will also practice a meditation and leave time at the end of the class for discussion and takeaways. Together\, this will constitute the foundation upon which you will be able to build a strong mindful meditation practice of your own. \nIn addition to meditations\, we will also experience a Crystal Bowl Sound Bath. Part meditation\, part listening exercise\, Sound Baths are healing musical performances played with crystal singing bowls and chimes. They can be very therapeutic because you are literally bathed in sound waves\, where you will enter a state of deep relaxation. Sound baths help facilitate shifts in our brainwaves by using entrainment. Entrainment synchronizes our brainwaves by providing a stable frequency which the brainwaves can attune to. By listening to the rhythm and frequencies of the crystal bowls\, we can downshift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness) and even reach theta (meditative state) where profound learning\, healing and growth can occur. \nIn week two\, you will cover: \n\nAttitudes: Beginner’s Mind and Trust\nMeditation: Body Scan\n\nSpecial Instructions: Attendees can sit in a chair or on the floor for this program. Participants are encouraged to bring a yoga mat\, towel\, or small blanket; chairs will be available for those who prefer to use one. The room can also be cool during this program\, so cold-sensitive participants may also want to bring a light jacket or sweater. All attendees are also encouraged to bring their own bottles of water. \nThis program is presented by Camille Sacco and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nAbout the Program Presenter \nCamille Sacco is an American Institute of Health Care Professionals Mindfulness Coach and meditation instructor. She is also a graduate of the acclaimed Palouse Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Course. Sacco is the author of two self-help books\, “Hippiebanker: Bringing Peace\, Love and Spirituality to the Workplace” and her latest book\, “Firefly Culture: Illuminate Your Workplace by Tuning in to Mindfulness.” She leads fun and informative classes and workshops on mindful meditations and her coaching sessions are infused with down-to-Earth guidance. She is both informative and fun in her approach. Her goal is to help people tap in to the wisdom of their soul by cultivating daily practices that will inspire confidence in the pursuit of living their lives with a higher purpose. SUMMARY:Mindfulness and Meditation: Non-striving and Patience
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for “Mindfulness and Meditation: Non-striving and Patience” on Monday\, August 1 at 7 PM. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial Note: Participants are encouraged to attend each week session of the four-week program\, but it is not a requirement. You may sign up for any of the four programs without attending the others. \nThis four-week program with Meditation Instructor Camille Sacco will introduce you to the concepts of mindfulness and meditation. The attitude you bring to your practice is crucial. It is the soil in which we will effectively cultivate daily practices that will inspire confidence in the pursuit of living our lives with a higher purpose. \nEach session\, you’ll discuss two attitudes and how they relate to mindfulness. You will also practice a meditation and have time at the end of the class for discussion and takeaways. Together\, this will constitute the foundation upon which you will be able to build a strong mindful meditation practice of your own. \nIn addition to meditations\, you’ll also experience a Crystal Bowl Sound Bath. \nIn week one\, you will cover: \nAttitudes: Non-striving and Patience. Meditation: Awareness of Breath \nSpecial Instructions: Attendees can sit in a chair or on the floor for this program. Sacco is the author of two self-help books\, “Hippie banker: Bringing Peace\, Love and Spirituality to the Workplace” and her latest book\, “Firefly Culture: Illuminate Your Workplace by Tuning in to Mindfulness.” She leads fun and informative classes and workshops on mindful meditations and her coaching sessions are infused with down-to-Earth guidance. She is both informative and fun in her approach. Her goal is to help people tap in to the wisdom of their soul by cultivating daily practices that will inspire confidence in the pursuit of living their lives with a higher purpose. SUMMARY:The Men who Made Juneteenth Possible (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for “The Men who Made Juneteenth Possible: Black Soldiers and Sailors in the Civil War” on June 21 at 1 PM.\n\n\nAmericans across the nation will come to celebrate a new federal holiday on June 19. In honor of Juneteenth\, which commemorates slave Emancipation in Texas\, Dr. Barbara A. Gannon\, associate professor of History at the University of Central Florida\, will discuss this new holiday\, a day that is representative of all the emancipations that took place across the South during the American Civil War\, with a presentation on “The Men who Made Juneteenth Possible: Black Soldiers and Sailors in the Civil War.” \nThis lecture will further highlight the role of African American soldiers during America’s most deadly war; 200\,000 men who fought to free their race and preserve the Union. Among the battles discussed will also be Olustee\, the largest and most important battle that occurred in Florida during the Civil War. \nThe purpose of this lecture is not to also retell the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry at Fort Wagner highlighted in the Oscar-winning feature film\, Glory; instead\, it is to tell the story of the more than 100 other Black regiments that served in the Federal army. Among the subjects that will be discussed: the recruitment of African American soldiers\, the discrimination faced by these men\, and the importance of their service to Union victory. In addition to telling their stories\, Dr. Gannon will highlight their white comrades’ view of their service. After the war\, white soldiers who fought at their side clearly remembered that these men had sacrificed for the Union cause\, which included preserving the Union and freeing the slaves. \nThis program is presented by Dr. Barbara Gannon and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nCancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. Cancelling can be done in two easy ways: by calling 407.644.2492 and selecting Option 1\, then Option 3 to speak to a representative or by using the online ticket cancellation option in your original confirmation email from Eventbrite. \nBy participating in this program\, you agree to CHWB’s Gracious Space policy. \nAbout Your Program Presenter \nBarbara A. Gannon is an associate professor of history at the University of Central Florida. She received her B.A. from Emory University\, an M.A. from George Washington University\, and a Ph.D. from The Pennsylvania State University. She is the author of The Won Cause: Black and White Comradeship in the Grand Army of the Republic (UNC Press\, 2011). SUMMARY:CHWB Book Club\, Session 3: Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for CHWB Book Club\, Session 3: The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery on Thursday\, June 16 at 11 AM in Community Conference A.\n\n\nA book club can have several goals at once\, including the social aspect of getting together with others in a relaxed setting and the focused activity of discussing various elements of a particular book that everyone in the group has (mostly) read. A recent survey by BookBrowse of over 5\,500 individuals engaged in book clubs across the country reported that survey responders highlighted both the value of discussion focused on the chosen book AND the social nature of the group. In this second session of our yearlong CHWB Book Club\, you’ll join Dr. Annette Kelly\, an avid reader\, and the board president of Neighbors Network\, who aims to help you do both! \nAbout this Session’s Featured Book: The Soul of an Octopus by Sy Montgomery \nDoes the image of an octopus make you shudder? Especially when remembering the scary films and stories of long ago? In our book selection for April\, we will meet several octopuses (NOT octopi!) and really get to know Octavia\, a Giant Pacific Octopus\, through the amazing experiences of naturalist and writer Sy Montgomery\, who goes beyond observing to building a real relationship. Consider that an octopus is put together completely differently from a mammal with three hearts\, a brain that wraps around its throat\, and a covering of slime instead of hair. Its blood is blue because copper\, not iron\, carries its oxygen; it can weigh as much as a man\, stretch as long as a car\, yet can pour its baggy\, boneless body through an opening the size of an orange. It can taste with its skin. And it’s smart! Meet Octavia and others in the book\, and then let’s get together and talk about it on June 16. \nSpecial Note: Participants are asked to purchase the paperback of the featured book prior to the program’s start date. Book clubs work well when participants have read the book\, but this is not a requirement. Being open to the opinions and reflections of others is important\, as is staying on topic. Other elements of a “good” discussion: making room for everyone who wishes to speak\, being attentive when others are speaking\, not interrupting\, or arguing\, and encouraging less talkative members to join in. \nMark Your Calendars and Stay Tuned: The CHWB Book Club will meet on the following dates in 2022: August 18\, October 20 and December 15. Book selection details and registration options to come! This program is presented by Dr. Annette Kelly and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \nCancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. Canceling your reservation for this program is especially important as most of our programs have limited capacities. She is also a retired nurse practitioner and nursing professor with experience locally as the former CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association. She was the former assistant professor of Nursing at Florida Southern College. Kelly is an avid reader who has been married 58 years and enjoys spending time with her four children and four grandchildren.

His choice of college was a subject of national interest\, and his arrival at Duke University cemented the program’s arrival at the top. In his freshman year\, he led the team to its first NCAA championship and three championship appearances in four years. His Duke career produced some of the most iconic moments in college basketball history\, and Coach K proved to be a lifelong mentor. Later\, as one of the NBA’s best players and a new face of the Detroit Pistons franchise\, Hill was the first person with the potential to give Michael Jordan a run for his money\, not just as a player but as a brand. His $45 million rookie contract was almost the least of it. He turned down Nike for Fila\, and soon Method Man and Tupac Shakur were wearing his shoes. \nHill writes candidly about all of it\, including the transactional impermanence of life in the league and the isolation caused by his growing fame. His parents and friends helped ground him\, and eventually\, he met a gifted musician named Tamia. The love he found with her and the arrival of their two beautiful daughters would be his rock as a brutal and mysterious injury sidelined him\, coinciding with his wife’s own serious health struggles. \nWith openness and insight\, Hill relates his entire path\, including post-career highlights like his Hall of Fame induction\, co-ownership of the Atlanta Hawks\, the directorship of the USA Basketball Men’s National Team\, and even a yearly gig calling the Final Four. Hill’s father\, Calvin\, used to tell him that there were always a lot of reasons but never any excuses\, and Game is a distillation of a lifetime’s effort to understand the reasons—the good and the bad. At his hardest moments\, Hill sought out wisdom from others\, stories of inspiration\, and overcoming obstacles. Now\, with Game\, he has returned the favor.
