DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Movement as Medicine! This free class is designed for those diagnosed with a neurological diagnosis such as Parkinson’s\, ALS\, MS\, dementia\, and many more. Those caring for a loved one with these diagnoses are also welcome to join class for some self-care! Each class incorporates dance and creative movement to address balance\, flexibility and spatial awareness. Led by Dr. Suzanne Salapa\, Chair of the Valencia College\, School of Arts & Entertainment\, Department of Dance\, explores motion in ways that are stimulating and enjoyable. Dr. Salapa has been formally trained by the internationally acclaimed Dance for PD® Program\, created and sustained by the Mark Morris Dance Center\, Brooklyn\, New York.  This class focuses on stretching and strengthening muscles\, coordination\, balance and rhythm. Over the years\, our Movement as Medicine Performers (not required for class participation) have often been requested to perform multiple times a year in and around our community. Dr. Salapa has been formally trained by the internationally acclaimed Dance for PD® Program\, created and sustained by the Mark Morris Dance Center\, Brooklyn\, New York. Built upon the fundamental premise that professionally trained dancers are movement experts\, the class focuses on stretching and strengthening muscles\, coordination\, balance and rhythm. A cancer survivor herself\, she provides compassionate\, holistic\, integrative and state of the art medical care. She is especially known for her expertise in radical debulking surgeries to remove advanced tumors and has a passion for cancer research. Dr. McKenzie\, who speaks four languages fluently\, earned her medical degree with research honors in New York; completed residency and fellowship at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital & Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. She also earned her Master of Science in Public Health and Epidemiology with honors while completing her fellowship training after which she was inducted into the Honor Society of graduate and professional schools. She has received numerous awards and has been voted by medical staff as best physician colleague. Her innovative research initiatives during the early part of her career resulted in research funding awards and recognition. Most recently Dr. Mckenzie was selected as one of 16 oncologists from all over the united states and the world to undergo extensive leadership training with the premier oncology society\, ASCO. As a graduate of this leadership development program\, she sits on national committees that monitor and provide guidance to oncology practices throughout the country. With a passion for teaching\, she serves as the current Program Director of Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship and has affiliate faculty appointments with the FSU and UCF Colleges of Medicine through which she regularly mentors students and residents. Wright joined the Winter Park Health Foundation\, owner of the Crosby Wellness Center and co-owner and primary developer of the CHWB\, in March 2019. As the wellbeing guide\, she works directly with community members providing wellbeing coaching and consultation. Wright makes suggestions\, provides educational resources\, and links each person to programs and services suited to attain health and wellbeing goals safely and smartly. She also creates an individualized plan and provides motivational support as each community member works to achieve success along their personal wellbeing journey. Wright has more than 20 years of professional experience\, including the following areas of expertise: Social Services\, Health Education\, Community Relations\, Management\, Personal Training\, and Fitness Coaching. She earned a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling and two bachelor’s degrees. She is passionate about helping others reach their goals and achieve self-empowerment.
