SUMMARY:Retrain Your Brain to Support Your Wellness Goals
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for “Retrain Your Brain to Support Your Wellness Goals ” on Tuesday\, Sept. 13 at 11 AM.\n\n\nSo often\, self-defeating talk\, harsh self-criticism and difficulty tolerating physical and mental discomfort create barriers to the wellness goals we wish to achieve. Based in part on the work of Dr. Kelly McGonigal\, the author of The Neuroscience of Change\, in this program Licensed Mental Health Counselor Alison C. Issen will explore the foundations of positive change and changing our relationship to stress. You’ll discuss ways of turning your mind away from your default patterns and negativity that no longer serve you\, in order to establish new behaviors and attitudes that support and sustain your current goals and values. \nBy participating in this program\, you can expect to: \n\nExplore what weakens your willpower and why your reserves are limited\nLink the effect of high stress levels on willpower\, and learn how changing our relationship to stress will enhance your abilities to effect desired change\nLearn strategies to overcome common barriers to desired behavior change such as “surfing the urge\,” “terror management” and distress tolerance\n\nThis program is presented by Alison Issen and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation. \n Cancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, canceling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. Issen has a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida\, and is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor\, as well as a Registered Nurse. Alison recently retired as the outpatient counselor at Orlando Health/UFHealth Cancer Center. For several years\, Alison coordinated the Sage-ing Center\, a program which encourages and supports adults of all ages\, but particularly those in the second half of life\, to inventory\, evaluate and intentionally plan a life of purpose\, learning\, fulfillment and community service. Alison brought this comprehensive program to the hospice several years ago and developed Hospice of the Comforter’s Quality of Life Education Program. Alison has taught psychology at the college level\, and has worked in the field of health and wellness for over 35 years\, including over 10 years as a hospice nurse and counselor. Her areas of specialty include stress management\, grief and loss\, end-of-life\, aging and relationship issues\, Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy and Positive Psychology. Beyond her professional life\, Alison is an “extreme gardener\,” volunteers at a local animal shelter and performs with local singing and theatre groups.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for “Short Story Writing” on Tuesday\, September 13 at 1 PM\n\n\nDo you have an itch to write but need encouragement? Or don’t know where your story begins? In this program\, Central Florida Community Arts Teaching Artist Chris Hicks will empower you to capture your imagination and put it down on paper. Using a series of writing and creative short story techniques\, Hicks will lead you on a journey of self-discovery.This class is suitable for writers of all levels\, whether you’re a returning or new Short Story attendee. At the end of the class\, you’ll leave with new friendships and an original\, creative work of art (as time permits). \nBy participating in this program\, you can expect to: \n\nlearn the roadmap to creating a short story to utilize in future works.\ncreate your own original work during this session.\nconnect with other creative writers.\n\nSpecial Instructions: Participants are encouraged to bring paper and a writing utensil to this program. \nThis program is presented by Chris Hicks and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation in collaboration with CFCArts. \nCancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. Chris has a bachelor’s degree in Speech/ Theatre from Northern Illinois University and a Masters Degree in Teaching from National Louis University. Chris’ involvement with CFCArts includes teaching the Narrators! class as well as creative writing and acting workshops throughout the community. In her spare time\, she enjoys costuming and performing with theaters\, most notably as Ethyl in “On Golden Pond” and Mae Peterson in “Bye Bye Birdie\,” where she was recognized by the Orlando Sentinel as one of Orlando Theatre’s Best of 2019 Performers.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for “Tea Meditation” on Tuesday\, September 13 at 7 PM.\n\n\nTea\, with its centuries-old roots in Eastern medicine and cultural practices\, has long been considered a way to good health\, happiness\, and wisdom. Now\, modern western researchers are realizing tea’s role in managing mental and physical health – in addition to supporting lower stress and anxiety\, studies have even found that some teas may help with cancer\, heart disease\, and diabetes\, encourage weight loss\, and lower cholesterol. \nThis program focuses on learning to be in tune with what you feel in your body and following that intuition in the real world. You’ll taste a series of herbal teas designed to give you energy and relax the mind; then\, you’ll take a silent moment and get in touch with your body. During this hour\, program presenter Julie Ward\, a plant-based\, certified ACE health coach and international health speaker\, will lead you through a tasting of three different herbal teas and guide you to notice where the energy moves in your body. Attendees are encouraged to bring an open mind\, one ready to explore and connect with your body. \nIn this program\, you can expect to:  \n\nUnderstand what herbs can give you energy\, without caffeine\nLearn to tune in to energy moving through your body\nLearn to notice the connection between what you take in and what you feel\n\nProgram notes:  \n\nPlease bring a yoga mat if you’d like to relax and sit on the floor. Otherwise\, chairs will be provided.\nThose on certain blood thinners and gastro medicines should consult with their physician prior to sampling certain herbal teas.
