SUMMARY:IDEAS Hive: Light Pollution with Dark-Sky Association (In Person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us in person for IDEAS Hive: Light Pollution with Dark-Sky Association on Wednesday\, January 19\, 2022 at 6:45 PM.\n\n\nFor centuries\, we looked to the skies for inspiration and navigation. Today\, it’s increasingly difficult to see the stars from our homes. \nLight pollution — the inappropriate or excessive use of artificial light — is the most avoidable form of pollution. It can negatively impact many aspects of our lives\, including the environment\, our health and our energy consumption. In Florida\, light pollution is causing serious issues for wildlife\, especially migrating animals like birds\, sea turtles\, butterflies and bees. How can you help? Steven Miller\, from International Dark-Sky Association\, will cover this topic\, sharing ways you can combat light pollution even in your own backyard. \nThis program is presented by Steven Miller and hosted by the Winter Park Health Foundation in collaboration with IDEAS For Us. \nA note regarding COVID-19 safety protocols: At this time\, all guests at the Center for Health & Wellbeing are required to wear masks in all indoor spaces\, including during our education programs. Presenters may remove their masks in order to be better heard by audience members. Attendees\, however\, must keep their masks fully in place (covering the nose and mouth) during the entire presentation. In accordance with CHWB guidelines\, our programs will also be limited in capacity and rooms set to account for social distancing. \nCancelling Your Reservation: If you are unable to attend a program\, cancelling your reservation gives us an accurate count of how many to expect; for sold-out programs\, cancelling your reservation also allows someone on the waitlist to attend in your place. Cancelling your reservation for this program is especially important as we are currently limiting capacities as part of our COVID-19 safety regulations. Cancelling can be done in two easy ways: by calling 407.644.2492 and selecting Option 1\, then Option 3 to speak to a representative or by using the online ticket cancellation option in your original confirmation email from Eventbrite. \nBy participating in this program\, you agree to CHWB’s Gracious Space policy. \nAbout the Program Presenter \nSteven Miller is a photographer in Orlando\, Florida. Not just any photographer\, Miller includes night sky portraits for his clients! He makes sure to bring his laser pointer to point out constellations and also illustrate the skyglow domes surrounding the area. He brings people out to International Dark-Sky places in Florida and shares information about the International Dark-Sky Association to everyone he works with. Miller is interested in implementing a yard-sign program that identifies homes with dark sky friendly lighting. \nAbout the Presenting Organizations \nAbout the International Dark-Sky Association \nThe International Dark-Sky Association is the recognized authority on light pollution and is the leading organization combating light pollution worldwide. To learn more\, please visit https://www.darksky.org/ \nAbout IDEAS Hive and IDEAS For Us \nThe IDEAS Hive is an interdisciplinary\, inter-generational community Think + Do Tank developed by IDEAS For Us\, an Orlando-based grassroots non-profit organization\, which is designed to educate the public about sustainability and help develop ideas into local action projects.
