What does it take to do something others said couldn’t be done? What inspires someone to take on monumental and record-breaking challenges and how can their example inspire the rest of us in our everyday lives?
In 2019, British yachtswoman Jeanne Socrates, 77, became the oldest person ever to sail around the world unassisted. In the process, she also became the first woman to sail solo nonstop unassisted around the world from North America.
Fresh off her world-record trip around the world, Growing Bolder is proud to welcome Jeanne to the Center for Health & Wellbeing. She’ll share stories from her incredible journey, and Growing Bolder Founder/CEO Marc Middleton will lead a moderated discussion with Jeanne about her persistence, tenacity and determination. Her story is shocking, surprising and most of all, it is inspiring.
Find out why this journey was important to her and how she overcame all kinds of obstacles, including a broken neck, to make her dream come true. Plus, if you think it’s too late for you to chart your own course for adventure, she’ll discuss not even learning to sail until she was in her late 40s.
This Growing Bolder Presents will be an intimate and revealing conversation with an explorer that you don’t want to miss!
This program is presented by the Winter Park Health Foundation.
About Jeanne Socrates
British yachtswoman Jeanne Socrates holds the record as the oldest person to circumnavigate the world unassisted and she is the only woman to have circumnavigated solo nonstop from North America.
She completed her record-setting trip around in the world in September 2019, more than 11 months after setting sail. It was her second time completing this incredible journey; in 2013, at the age of 70, she was awarded the Guinness World Record for being the oldest woman to circumnavigate the world solo. She made her first attempt in 2009; another attempt to complete the journey was postponed in 2017 after she sustained multiple injuries, including a broken neck, while working on her yacht, Nereida. She says hers is a story of persistence and determination.
Socrates is a retired mathematics professor. She and her late husband started sailing in their late 40s. She has two children and three grandchildren. Although her address is in Lymington, England, she considers home to be her boat, Nereida.
